The Definition Is.......
Literacy is defined by Wikipedia as the ability to read for knowledge and write coherently and think critically about the written word. According to Merriam-Webster, literacy is the quality or state of being literate. Literate is defined by Merriam-Webster as educated, cultured, and able to read. The question was asked what is literacy. By researching I found numerous definition of literacy yet none seemed to provide a clear definition. Wikipedia's definition of literacy acts as if literacy is an extra-ordinary skill. Almost as if ordinary people can't comprehend literacy. Merriam-Webster's definition provides a little clarity yet the definition of educated still remains unclear, it could have various definitions. In class we discussed how literacy can have various definitions. Class, I agree literacy does have various definitions, but the overall definition is how you view literacy. It's a personal thing. For example, the rapper Waka Flocka Flame, many people enjoy his music yet others feel that he lacks common school knowledge. Waka Flocka displays an image that attracts many people creating money for him. Some many see him as talented, and then some may see him as ignorant. It's all about how you view the situation and feel about his explicit manners. As humans we sometimes judge a person by looks before getting to know the person. For instance Tyler Perry, he once was homeless, no one would have thought that he would be the talented man that he is today. He has made millions being an actress, director, songwriter, and an entrepreneur he has far more job titles that's just a selected few. Some many have thought that he was uneducated but look where he is today. In I Just Wanna Be Average, he describes how literacy played a different role in various people lives then he told the reader how it impacts his own life. Not all the people in his life were what some may call smart, yet all were knowledgeable in their own way. Basically, literacy has no set measure it can be interpreted in many different ways. Literacy is just how you interpret, view, and feel about it.

I completely agree. I thought it was funny how Webster's dictionary definition used the word literate in it. It almost seems like the definition in all dictionaries should be the ability to read and write and all other aspects should be determined by yourself.
ReplyDeleteYou make a good Domelia and I didn't know TP was homeless before
ReplyDeleteI can agree with you, i think everyone kind of has there own definition of literacy. Whose to say who's right and who's wrong?
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you in the aspect of right and wrong. Everyone looks at life in there own way and this brings us to the point that you made about Waka Flocka. Maybe he wasn't the smartest person but he does have some good points if you actually listen to what he raps about.
